How’s your Mental Health?

There is no doubt that 2020 taught us we don’t truly control anything.

The pandemic has taught us how little we control. In fact, the real lesson is that we only truly control our attitudes in responding to us losing control - the way in which we perceive, react and reflect upon the circumstances presented.

I’ve never seen or experienced so many of us facing mental health challenges and we are not out of this yet by a long way.

So what can we do for ourselves, our co-workers, friends and family to help us deal with challenges to our mental health?

I certainly don’t claim to be a clinical expert in this area. However, I have picked up some useful hacks and resources over several decades in working 1-1 with business owners and their teams. Of course, there is no substitute for seeking professional help when things start to get big on you. The black dog of depression and mental health takes no prisoners if left unabated.

Here are 10 techniques I’ve found beneficial in nurturing positive mental health:

  1. ACT. A=Accept your thoughts/feelings and be present. C=Choose a valued direction. T=Take action.

  2. Practice regular meditation and affirmations.

  3. Maintain a regular exercise program and good sleep hygiene.

  4. Ensure regular AFD’s (Alcohol Free Days).

  5. Do 1 thing for yourself every day that brings pleasure. Nothing is too small. Acknowledge gratitude.

  6. Surround yourself in business and life with people you enjoy spending time with.

  7. Limit or eliminate your exposure to negative people or toxic media.

  8. Allocate a weekly window to clear your business admin and home admin. Set up a Monthly Catch-up Day to clear the decks.

  9. Schedule a Quarterly Retreat to reflect, reinvigorate and re-set yourself for the next 90 days.

  10. If your mental health is spiralling, seek professional help. Never see taking this step as a weakness. It is a sign of strength, honesty and accountability. Only you can make this happen.

With the New Year upon us and last year a bitter memory, let’s look after each other throughout the year ahead.

We can only be the best versions of ourselves if we are healthy between the ears.

Let’s bounce back from this pandemic and take the year on.

To your continued health!
