Momentum is a true force. It seems to take forever to establish, but can be lost in a moment.
In this blog, I explore the power of momentum as your greatest ally and how to maintain it in a complex world.
I’m constantly surprised how little is written in business commentary around momentum.
Regardless of your business industry, background or location – we are all trying to build momentum.
Momentum is when you are in flow.
We all know that wonderful feeling when opportunities and expectations align.
The symmetry is beautiful.
It’s almost if you are floating with a predetermined script playing out with you as the lead actor on the hero’s journey.
But what precedes this script is ‘The Work’.
The strategy sessions, the hiring (or the firing), the product or service delivery model tweaking, the early morning and late nights – the constant unrelentless commitment.
You did that.
Momentum is the delayed gratification of the 100 pincer-movements that you did over the many months and years prior.
Your actions - step by step - created momentum.
Momentum is your friend.
You were committed to doing whatever it took to get in flow.
And now you are there.
But be careful.
The time it took to gain that momentum can be suddenly lost so much quicker than it took to establish.
What are the enemies of momentum?
Hubris and complacency.
Taking your team for granted, losing key team members or allowing a poor culture to develop under your watch.
Dropping customer service standards and disrespecting customer loyalty.
Slow paying key loyal suppliers, misleading them or even cutting them for no valid reason.
Too often I’ve seen these behaviours creep into businesses where owners have a blind spot to these behavioural changes.
Now you’ve lost momentum.
How do you get it back?
It will be difficult and take time.
What irreparable damage has been done?
Have you burnt the boats?
Now back to the beginning.
Repeat strategic, successful, ethical, winning behaviours consistently over time.
Re-execute with integrity.
Lead the way.
Set the model behaviours.
Re-set.
Be patient.
Gain momentum.
Maintain momentum.
Momentum is your friend.
