I am an advocate of Walking Meetings.
We should do more of them.
Walking Meetings are best scheduled in a sprawling park or garden.
I meet one of key clients monthly at a park with our dogs.
And something wonderful usually happens.
Walking side by side, moving forward together seems to stimulate conversation.
Our flow of thought seems effortless.
Our conversation is in rhythm.
The fresh air contributes to clarity of thought.
The dogs occasionally distract us, making us smile. We take a moment to have a laugh or a side chat.
We stop for coffee.
We might talk on just one topic for an entire hour.
We take our time.
There is an ease in this environment beyond the boardroom or office.
Movement aids thought.
Conversation is fluid and there is alignment as we walk together.
We have more freedom to talk opening, without fear or favour.
We may also challenge each other’s thinking, in a safe non-threatening way.
There is a highly effective back-and-forth exchange.
An egalitarian balance exists within Walking Meetings.
We are equal side by side.
Nobody is the boss sitting at the head of the boardroom table.
There is no posturing.
The brain and body are operating at a higher frequency with blood flow to the body, higher heart rate and fresh oxygen hitting the lungs.
We also enjoy a side benefit of incidental exercise during a workday.
Our dogs love the walk and getting out of the house on a weekday.
On reflection afterwards, I sometimes marvel at where our conversations lead us and the insights gained.
In just one Walking Meeting, we often resolve key problems or workshop major opportunities that we can take away to execute.
I implore you to introduce Walking Meetings into your business environment.
Choose the right venue and walking partner.
Be open and listen intently.
Be vulnerable and share your best ideas.
Walking Meetings Rock!
Meet you at the park.
